Massachusetts residents may marry if they are 18 years of age
or older. The State of Massachusetts requires a marriage license
issued to both individuals. You can apply to any city or town clerk
in Massachusetts. License fees vary from city to city. Blood tests
are no longer required. There is a mandatory three-day waiting
period including Sundays and holidays. The marriage license is
valid for 60 days.
A Justice of the Peace cannot perform the ceremony until the
license is made available.
After your wedding, the officiant completes and signs the form, and returns it to the town or city where it was granted. After the license
has been filed with the Registry of Vital Records and Statistics, you
will be able to obtain a certified copy from the town or city for a
nominal fee.
